Three to five months

eight nights, two bases, one car, and a window that closes quietly

Reserve a trip to the Peloponnese a season ahead and get May or late September on the right terms

Reserve a trip to the Peloponnese a season ahead and you can still choose the room, the base and a flight that lands in daylight. Three to five months is the honest number for this one.

Eight nights, from $2,640 per person.

Booking here means this office places the reservation with the company that runs the trip. Nothing is paid to us, no card is held, and there is no checkout anywhere on this site.

The request form takes bookings 24/7 and keeps no closing time. A person opens what arrives before the working day ends.

Eight nights, two bases, one car with about 460 miles on it by the end. The first base sits in the Argolid, the second in the Mani, and the drive between them takes four hours if you stop once and six if you stop where you should. People reserve a trip to the Peloponnese a season ahead for a reason that has nothing to do with airfare: the rooms worth having in the far south are small buildings with single figure room counts, and they fill in the order the calendar opens them.

May and late September are the two windows this page is built around. In May the olive terraces are still green down to the water and the sea is around 68 degrees, which is cold enough that most people swim once and then sit. Late September gives you 77 degree water, dry hills, and light that comes in low across the ruins after four in the afternoon. Both months put daytime highs in the high seventies to mid eighties. July does not. July on that coast runs 95 and up inland, and the stone holds it after dark.

The desk books the rooms, the car and the admissions. Other companies own the buildings, rent the vehicle and run the sites. We have driven this route and we will tell you where the road narrows.

Notice
Three to five months, the ordinary window
How far ahead
Three to five months ahead, counted from the first night, not from the day you start reading about it.
What has to be reserved first
The first thing gone is not the flight. It is the small stone-house rooms in the Mani, mostly six to nine rooms per building, which release their May and late September dates in January and hold a real choice for roughly six to eight weeks. Come in at ten weeks out and the coastal villages of the Deep Mani are largely spoken for; what remains sits inland above Areopoli or in the larger properties at Kardamyli, which are pleasant and are not the same trip. The fallback we arrange most often is Kardamyli for the sea nights and a shorter Mani day loop by car, which keeps the towers and loses the sound of the water at night.

Shape of it
two bases, hire car, stone towers and olive terraces
What is in the figure
Eight nights in two bases, room only; category B hire car for eight days with the standard collision waiver already paid; all road tolls on the Athens to Corinth to Tripoli axis; site admission at Mycenae, Tiryns, Mystras and the Diros caves; a written day by day driving plan with parking notes; airport pickup of the car at Athens and drop at Kalamata, or the reverse; one written amendment after confirmation at no charge.
What is not
International and domestic flights; fuel, which runs about $70 to $95 across the eight days depending on how far south you push; every meal, including breakfast unless the room lists it; the second driver fee, roughly $6 a day; ferry crossings if you add Kythira; parking in Nafplio old town, which is paid and off the peninsula; tips; anything bought on the day from a guide, a boatman or a museum shop; the fuel deposit held on your card at pickup and released after return; any night added beyond the eight.
Who it does not suit
Anyone who will not drive. There is no version of this itinerary that works on buses, and the Mani stretch involves single track road with passing places, blind stone corners and about 2,000 feet of climbing and dropping in a single afternoon. Also wrong for anyone tied to July or August: the coast then runs above 95 degrees inland, the archaeological sites shed their shade by ten in the morning, and the whole trip becomes a different and harder proposition. And wrong for anyone who wants one hotel and a pool for eight days, because half the point here is the car.

Stone, terraces and the road south

The Argolid is soft country by Greek standards. Mycenae sits on a low saddle between two hills with the Lion Gate at the top of a short ramp, maybe 150 feet of climb from the parking area, and the whole circuit takes ninety minutes at a slow pace. Tiryns, fifteen minutes away, is flatter and emptier and its walls are thicker: blocks of five and six tons, laid without mortar, still standing at about 25 feet where the corridor runs.

Mystras is the harder day and worth planning around. The site climbs a spur of Mount Taygetos from about 900 feet at the lower gate to roughly 2,050 feet at the castle, and the surface is worn cobble on a gradient, slick when wet. There are two entrances. Go in at the upper gate, walk down, and take a taxi or a second car back up, or you spend the afternoon climbing what you already descended. Buildings here are shells with frescoes inside them, and they are described on the boards as architecture.

Then the Mani. South of Areopoli the land stops pretending: bare limestone, dry stone walls, and the tower houses, three to five floors of unmortared block with slit openings, built family against family. Vathia has a whole hillside of them, largely roofless. The road down to Gerolimenas is asphalt and narrow, with drops on the seaward side and no barrier for long stretches, and it is 47 miles from Areopoli to Cape Tainaron and back with a walking hour at the end.

What opens in January and what is gone by March

The chain runs in one direction. Small properties in the Deep Mani publish their spring and autumn calendars in January, and the sea facing rooms in the six to nine room buildings are the constraint on the whole trip. Everything else on this itinerary, the car, the sites, the Argolid rooms, can be arranged with four weeks of notice in a normal year. So the reservation date is really the Mani room date, and everything upstream of it is bookkeeping.

Flights are a separate and slower squeeze. Direct summer service into Kalamata thins out from early October and does not resume until late April, so a late September trip can fly out of Kalamata and a mid October one usually cannot. That is why the car is reserved one way, Athens to Kalamata, and why the direction sometimes flips.

January
small Mani properties release May and late September; the good rooms are choosable
February
sea facing rooms in the Deep Mani thin out; Kardamyli still open
March
Gerolimenas and Limeni largely committed for late September; inland Areopoli remains
April
one way car drops to Kalamata start pricing up; automatics get scarce
Ten weeks out
choice is between a larger property or an inland base with a day loop
Four weeks out
the trip is bookable but you take the room that is left, not the room you asked for

From your first message to the confirmation in your hand

You write, we read it the same working day. Then we go and ask the actual buildings, because availability shown anywhere else is a guess about six rooms. the costing the costing takes two to four working days on top on top, and it comes broken into room, car and admissions so you can see which part is doing the damage. Nothing is held on your card while that happens, and no money is taken on this site.

  1. First messageyou name the month, the two bases you want and how many people are driving
  2. Room checkwe contact the Mani property directly and the Argolid room second, since the south is the constraint
  3. Written figuretwo to four working days, itemized by room, car, tolls and admissions, with the alternates named if your first choice is gone
  4. Confirmationthe properties confirm to you in writing, the car is reserved one way, and you get the driving plan with parking notes and the road narrows marked

Tell us the month and we will tell you what is left

Say May or late September, say how many of you and whether anyone else drives, and we will come back with what is actually open in the south right now and what it costs. If the month you want is already tight, we will say so in the same message rather than let you find out in March.

Sending this reserves nothing and holds no number. Requests reach this form 24/7. It has no closing time to keep.

A person opens this, looked at before the working day ends. Pricing it against your own dates is slower and runs to two to four working days, because a second company answers on a clock this desk does not control. Card details are wanted at no point, here or later.
